Breaking: Cardinals Receive Ground-breaking Masyn Winn Update After First Gold Glove Award

The offseason festivities officially began on Saturday night, when the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Toronto Blue Jays in seven games to win the 2025 World Series.

On Sunday, Rawlings announced the winners of the American and National League Gold Glove Awards. This year, the St. Louis Cardinals had two finalists, but only one won.

That winner was shortstop Masyn Winn, who was outstanding defensively throughout the 2025 season. For the majority of the season, Winn led baseball in Outs Above Average (OAA) until being sidelined by a torn meniscus. Despite missing the final two weeks, he finished tied for third in OAA with 21, behind only Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. and Chicago Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong.

Each of those players also won Gold Glove Awards in their respective leagues, with Crow-Armstrong defeating another Cardinals nominee, center fielder Victor Scott II, for the National League award.

Winn also finished tied for sixth in Fielding Run Value (FRV), ranking third among all National League players—a solid indication of his defensive consistency and range throughout the season.

Cardinals' Masyn Winn Has Positive Update After Surgery

His Gold Glove is the first for a Cardinals shortstop since Edgar Renteria won back-to-back medals in 2002 and 2003.

Now the focus goes to the Platinum Glove Award, which recognizes the greatest overall defense in each league. Winn will be among the favorites, but he will face significant competition from Crow-Armstrong and Ke’Bryan Hayes.

The St. Louis Cardinals infielder is moving in the right direction…

Masyn Winn earns first Gold Glove Award

The 2025 Major League Baseball season may be over, but Sunday brought some great news for the St. Louis Cardinals. Shortstop Masyn Winn was announced as the National League Gold Glove Award winner at shortstop — the first of his young career. The honor is an impressive milestone, and Winn is now the youngest player in Cardinals history to claim the award.

Positive injury update for Cardinals shortstop

Just a day later, more encouraging news arrived. Winn, who underwent season-ending knee surgery to repair a meniscus injury, provided an update that his recovery is going well. According to Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat, Winn revealed during a Zoom interview that the injury wasn’t as severe as initially feared.

Cardinals news: Masyn Winn to continue playing after meniscus tear diagnosis

“Masyn Winn, on a Zoom just now talking about his Gold Glove win, says that surgery revealed his meniscus tear was not as bad as feared,” Jones shared. “He’s almost six weeks out and already into light jogging; once he hits six weeks, it’s swinging and other baseball activity.”

The Cardinals have a cornerstone in Masyn Winn

When Winn’s surgery was first announced, the team expected him to be fully healthy by Spring Training, and his current progress only reinforces that optimism.

The 2025 campaign was a roller-coaster season for St. Louis. Despite low expectations, the Cardinals started strong and looked like contenders early before fading in the second half and missing the postseason. Through it all, Winn remained a consistent bright spot.

Across 129 games, the 23-year-old batted .253/.310/.363 with nine home runs, 51 RBIs, nine stolen bases, 27 doubles, and 72 runs scored — all while playing elite defense at shortstop. Even amid a turbulent season, Winn has clearly emerged as a foundational piece for the franchise’s future.
