Breaking: Carolina Panthers Trade Lands 2x Super Bowl Champion in Massive Move

Pro Football Focus recently outlined ideal destinations for several of the NFL’s top upcoming free agents, breaking down where each player would fit best and the reasoning behind those projections. The list featured some of the league’s biggest defensive names, including Bengals edge rusher Trey Hendrickson, Chargers veteran Khalil Mack, Commanders linebacker Bobby Wagner, among others.

One player who drew particular attention was Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Leo Chenal, a two time Super Bowl champion. According to PFF, the Carolina Panthers represent the best possible landing spot for Chenal as he prepares to enter free agency for the first time in his career.

Chenal is coming off the completion of his four year, $5.04 million rookie deal with the Chiefs. While his role in Kansas City was somewhat limited, he was primarily deployed as a blitzer, he showed steady growth throughout his tenure. When he was on the field, Chenal consistently made an impact and proved to be an efficient contributor within the defensive scheme.

Leo Chenal's Chiefs career might be over after painful injury twist

PFF highlighted Chenal’s noticeable progress in pass coverage, an area that had been viewed as a weakness earlier in his career. He earned a 72.6 pass coverage grade this past season, the highest mark he has posted so far. That skill set would be especially valuable for Carolina, whose linebackers struggled badly in coverage and frequently surrendered big gains over the middle.

PFF noted that the Panthers failed to field a single linebacker with an overall grade above 55 during the season, a benchmark that falls well below even average performance. For perspective, grades in the 60 to 69 range typically reflect average or reserve level play.

Adding Chenal would give Carolina a proven winner with championship experience, someone who understands what a high level defense looks like and how it operates in critical moments. His presence could elevate the linebacker room, improve communication, and help stabilize the defense as a whole.

Chiefs' Most Underrated Player Is Entering a Contract Year

With Carolina still working toward consistent complementary football, Chenal could step into a full time role immediately, potentially serving as the green dot leader responsible for defensive calls. Just as important, he is unlikely to command an overwhelming contract. A larger role and a reasonable price point make Chenal and the Panthers a natural fit, one that could help him take the next step toward becoming one of the league’s top linebackers.
