Few players in the NBA are more likely to be traded this offseason than Jrue Holiday. The Boston Celtics starter is expected to be the odd man out as the team looks to retool following Jayson Tatum’s injury and reduce their historic payroll. While Holiday remains a highly valuable player, his large contract—with three years still remaining—makes it difficult for Boston to justify keeping him as the league’s most expensive roster.
As a result, Celtics GM Brad Stevens is expected to explore every possible avenue to find the best return for Holiday. One potential trade partner could be a familiar rival—the Miami Heat—possibly involving a reunion with former Celtic Terry Rozier.
A proposed deal might see the Celtics send Holiday to Miami in exchange for Rozier and the Heat’s 2025 first-round pick (No. 20 overall).
Rozier has struggled since being acquired by the Heat at the 2024 trade deadline. He shot just 39.1% from the field and 29.5% from beyond the arc last season, and he’s no longer the defensive presence he once was during his Boston days. However, this move would primarily be about financial flexibility for the Celtics. Rozier’s contract is roughly $6 million cheaper than Holiday’s for next season and expires after 2025–26, clearing cap space by the 2026 offseason.
Because Holiday is the superior player, the Heat would sweeten the deal with their 2025 first-round pick. Boston could use that pick to draft a cost-controlled rookie or pair it with their own 28th overall selection to move up in the draft.

While this deal may not seem like a blockbuster on paper, it would give the Celtics valuable financial breathing room and flexibility to make additional moves with an eye toward long-term sustainability.
