The Kansas City Chiefs boast one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history, yet his salary doesn’t quite reflect that status.
Recently, the San Francisco 49ers signed Brock Purdy to a five-year, $265 million extension—pushing him ahead of Mahomes in terms of annual pay. While Purdy is a talented quarterback, many believe Mahomes should be earning more.
In fact, Purdy is just one of 12 quarterbacks currently making more per year than the new signing. Among the most surprising is Cleveland Browns QB Deshaun Watson, who is expected to miss the entire 2025 season due to an Achilles injury suffered in Week 7 of 2024. Meanwhile, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is making a whopping $60 million annually.
Mahomes earns $45 million per year, placing him in a tie for 13th among NFL quarterbacks in average annual salary.

With that in mind, the Chiefs may soon look to restructure Mahomes’ deal—either by front-loading more money or extending the contract to reward him accordingly. His current deal runs until he’s 36, but Mahomes has expressed interest in playing into his 40s, which would make adding extra years a logical move.
Given Mahomes’ value to the franchise, it’s highly likely the Chiefs will ensure their superstar quarterback receives the pay he truly deserves when the time is right.
