Breaking: Daniel Jones Makes Clear Transfer Decision About Indianapolis Colts over Minnesota Vikings despite lower offer

The Indianapolis Colts and Minnesota Vikings were both in pursuit of quarterback Daniel Jones during this offseason’s NFL free agency, but Jones ultimately signed with the Colts. Interestingly, Indianapolis secured the deal even though they reportedly offered less money.

NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero revealed on the Ross Tucker Podcast that, based on what he knows, the Vikings actually presented Jones with a deal that included more guaranteed money. Despite that, Jones declined their offer.

Jones had spent the latter part of the 2024 season with Minnesota, giving him time to learn head coach Kevin O’Connell’s offensive system. With Sam Darnold expected to leave in free agency, the Vikings were hopeful they could retain Jones as a potential starter.

Still, despite their stronger financial offer, Jones opted for Indianapolis, likely because of the clearer opportunity to become the starting quarterback. He’s already begun offseason workouts with Colts star receiver Michael Pittman Jr.

Minnesota didn’t find a replacement until April, when they traded fifth-round picks with the Seattle Seahawks (No. 142 for No. 172) to acquire quarterback Sam Howell. However, Howell is likely a short-term fix, as he’ll be a free agent again next offseason.

As the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Jones could’ve competed with rookie J.J. McCarthy for the starting role in Minnesota. Given his experience in the Vikings’ system and the high regard from the coaching staff, he would’ve had a strong chance to win the job over any external candidate.
