Minnesota Vikings Offense in Strong Position After Key Additions
The Minnesota Vikings appear well-positioned offensively following an impactful offseason. The team bolstered its interior offensive line with the signings of Will Fries and Ryan Kelly, along with selecting Donovan Jackson in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
They also strengthened their receiving corps by drafting Tai Felton in the third round. However, perhaps the most significant move came when they managed to re-sign star running back Aaron Jones, fresh off a career-best season in 2024.
Quarterback Remains the Biggest Unknown
Despite these upgrades, the biggest uncertainty surrounds the quarterback position. With Sam Darnold’s departure, the spotlight now turns to rookie JJ McCarthy, the former Michigan standout, who steps into the starting role. The key question remains: How well will he perform in his debut season?
Running Back Depth Still a Concern
While Jones delivered a strong 2024 campaign, he will turn 31 later this season. Behind him, newly acquired Jordan Mason has flashed potential, but it’s difficult to evaluate his true ability given that he previously ran behind Trent Williams and under Kyle Shanahan’s efficient outside zone system.
That’s not to discredit Mason’s contributions, but the Vikings could still benefit from adding another back—specifically one who excels on passing downs and in third-down situations.
Travis Etienne Could Be the Answer
There’s a potential solution already available: Travis Etienne. The Jacksonville Jaguars made a bold draft move this offseason, giving up a 2025 second-round pick and a 2026 first-rounder to select speedster Bhayshul Tuten in the fourth round. They also picked up LeQuint Allen Jr. in the seventh round, and with Tank Bigsby—last year’s third-round pick—emerging late in 2024, Etienne’s position as the lead back may now be in question.
Adding to the speculation, Etienne was absent from recent OTAs without a clear explanation, possibly signaling dissatisfaction with his role amid the crowded backfield.
Minnesota, meanwhile, could benefit from another reliable running back behind Jones and Mason—especially one with strong receiving skills like Etienne.
Although his $6 million salary might seem steep given his modest output last season (just 558 rushing yards), Jacksonville could be willing to absorb part of the cost to facilitate a trade.
Proposed Trade:
- Vikings receive: Travis Etienne
- Jaguars receive: 2026 5th Round Pick
With limited roster needs outside of cornerback, spending a late Day 3 pick on a versatile back like Etienne could be a smart move. It would provide Minnesota with valuable depth and maximize their competitive window while JJ McCarthy remains on his rookie deal.
