Breaking: Giants confirm replacement for Cam Skattebo after injury setback

The New York Giants are set to do something on Sunday they haven’t done all season — take the field without No. 44. Rookie running back Cam Skattebo suffered a devastating ankle injury against the Philadelphia Eagles, prematurely ending his first NFL campaign.

For Skattebo, the focus now shifts to recovery. For the rest of the team, it’s “next man up” — and that man is second-year running back Tyrone Tracy Jr., who looks ready to take on the challenge.

Speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Tracy expressed his determination to make the most of his opportunity:

“However the opportunity presents itself, you have to take advantage of it no matter what it is. I’m gonna go out there and execute my job and my responsibilities to the best that I can.”

When the Giants drafted Skattebo with the 105th overall pick in 2025, it was clear that Tracy Jr.’s starting role was in jeopardy. Through the first seven-plus games, Skattebo recorded 410 rushing yards and five touchdowns, along with 207 receiving yards and two more scores — firmly cementing his status as RB1.

But things change quickly in the NFL. In an instant, the 2024 fifth-rounder is back in control of the backfield.

The soon-to-be 26-year-old has been in this position before. As a rookie, he began the season behind veteran Devin Singletary, not earning his first start until Week 5. By midseason, though, he was one of the league’s most pleasant surprises.

Now, history seems to be repeating itself. Once again, Big Blue turns to the former Iowa wide receiver turned Purdue running back to steady the offense — and this time, the team’s need is even greater.

Perhaps no one depends on Tracy’s production more than rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, who’s already lost top wideout Malik Nabers to a torn ACL. Fortunately, Tracy’s receiver background makes him a natural fit to support Dart in the passing game.
