Breaking: Giants Rookie Accused of Causing Career-Ending Injury to Teammate

New York Giants rookie running back Cam Skattebo is facing his first professional challenge off the field.

As he gears up for his debut NFL season, the Arizona State alum is involved in a lawsuit related to an incident on a golf course that allegedly left a former college teammate, Mattheos Katergaris, with a career-ending injury.

According to a report by Jason Wolf of the Arizona Republic, Skattebo’s legal team denies any wrongdoing, stating there’s no valid evidence that he is liable for Katergaris’ injuries. His attorney, Todd Rinner of Snell & Wilmer, filed a formal response to the civil complaint on June 6.

The suit, filed in May 2024, seeks over $300,000 from the Arizona Board of Regents, claiming a teammate—identified as Skattebo—jumped onto the back of an already full golf cart. The weight allegedly caused the rear seat to collapse, resulting in Katergaris falling and severely injuring his elbow.

The lawsuit asserts that Skattebo knowingly disregarded the cart’s safety limits, directly contributing to the accident. At the time, Katergaris was an offensive lineman for Arizona State, and the incident took place in July 2023—prior to Skattebo’s first game with the Sun Devils.

Katergaris’ attorney, Neil Udulutch, described the injury as a deep elbow laceration that nearly severed the distal triceps tendon, requiring surgery and extended rehab.

Skattebo has denied all allegations and is seeking to have the case dismissed. The next court update is scheduled for February.

Meanwhile, on the field in East Rutherford, Skattebo is focused on carving out a role in the Giants’ backfield. Drafted in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, he’s expected to complement Tyrone Tracy Jr. with his powerful running style and strong pass protection—potentially earning snaps on passing downs.

At this time, the lawsuit is not expected to affect his status with the team.
