BREAKING: Hubert Davis deserves a proper UNC send off if this is actually the end

These are difficult days for everyone connected to North Carolina basketball. Simply put, it isn’t working. The evidence is right there in the results. The standard at North Carolina has always been clear, but right now it isn’t being reached. Change feels inevitable, and that likely means the end of Hubert Davis’s run as head coach.

Athletic director Bubba Cunningham has finally spoken publicly about Davis, but his words have only added to the uncertainty surrounding the program’s future.

Davis’ deep roots at North Carolina should never shield him from accountability. Being a former Tar Heel does not make a coach immune to criticism or dismissal. The program has been here before. Matt Doherty, despite significant issues during his tenure, was allowed to step away with dignity. That precedent shows how Carolina treats its own — with respect. Davis deserves, and is expected to receive, the same courtesy.

According to Pete Thamel, a decision on Davis’ future is expected in the coming days. Reports suggest UNC is leaning toward a change and would pursue elite coaching candidates should it move on, as first reported by Yahoo Sports.

Still, fans should not lose sight of the impact Davis has had. The results, including the collapse against VCU Rams in the first round, were unacceptable. Davis owns that. But he has also led the program with integrity, mirroring the values instilled by legends like Dean Smith and Roy Williams. He has cared deeply about his players, the program, and the Carolina identity, surrounding himself with staff who share that same devotion.

If Davis is indeed on his way out, it may also signal the end of the long tradition of keeping the job within the Carolina family. A move outside the Smith-Williams lineage would mark a major philosophical shift — one that could shake the foundation of the program. Perhaps that moment has arrived.

If this is the closing chapter of Davis’ tenure, North Carolina should do right by him. Acknowledge the effort, the character, and the values he upheld. Whatever comes next, he represented what the Tar Heels strive to be. Give him his flowers on the way out.
