BREAKING: Jedd Fisch brings in multiple-time Super Bowl winner to help UW offensive strategy

Washington’s offensive mastermind, Jedd Fisch, is widely recognized for his innovative approach, blending ideas he’s picked up from top minds across the NFL and college football. Throughout his coaching journey, he has learned from some of the game’s best, shaping a unique offensive philosophy. Fisch is always eager to expand his knowledge, experiment with new wrinkles, and seek advice from seasoned veterans.

Now, Fisch is adding another experienced mind to his staff by moving to hire Matt Cavanaugh, a multiple-time Super Bowl winner—twice as a player and once as an offensive coordinator. Cavanaugh has worked with a variety of coaches and quarterbacks over decades in the NFL, bringing a wealth of experience to the table.

According to Pete Nakos of On3.com, Washington is finalizing a deal to bring Cavanaugh on board as a senior offensive assistant for the Huskies, where he will collaborate closely with Fisch.

Cavanaugh’s football roots run deep. He was a standout quarterback at the University of Pittsburgh, leading the team to a National Championship in 1976. Drafted 50th overall by the New England Patriots in 1978, he went on to win two Super Bowls as Joe Montana’s backup with the San Francisco 49ers (XIX and XXV).

Following his playing career, Cavanaugh transitioned into coaching, taking roles with numerous NFL teams, including the Arizona Cardinals, Chicago Bears, Baltimore Ravens, New York Jets, Washington (formerly Redskins) Commanders, and San Francisco 49ers. He has primarily served as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator, though he has also coached tight ends. Most recently, he worked as a senior offensive assistant for the New York Jets in 2021.

This new role at Washington brings Cavanaugh out of retirement to help Fisch refine his offense, develop new strategies, and mentor the Huskies’ quarterbacks. His extensive NFL experience—including winning a Super Bowl as the Ravens’ offensive coordinator in 2000—makes him a perfect fit to elevate the Huskies’ offense in 2026. With Cavanaugh’s guidance, Fisch’s system is poised to reach new heights.
