Kansas State has welcomed back a familiar and respected figure to its football program, as Joe Bob Clements returns to Manhattan after spending more than a decade at Oklahoma State Cowboys football. The longtime defensive coach is stepping into a promising new role with the Kansas State Wildcats football, where he will serve as an assistant to the head coach and offensive forward scout. The move marks a homecoming for a coach deeply tied to the Wildcats’ football history.
Clements’ return comes at an unusual point in the offseason, with most coaching staffs already settled. However, his addition is viewed internally as a strategic move by head coach Collin Klein, who is continuing to shape his support staff as he builds the program’s future. The veteran coach brings decades of experience, both as a player and coach, which could prove valuable as Kansas State looks to strengthen its football operations.
Long before his coaching career, Clements built his legacy as a player for Kansas State. A four-year letterman for the Wildcats, he was part of teams that competed in notable bowl games such as the Aloha Bowl, Holiday Bowl, Cotton Bowl Classic, and Fiesta Bowl. His strong connection to the program continued when he later joined the coaching staff under legendary head coach Bill Snyder, helping develop defensive linemen and contributing to two Big 12 championship teams.
During his earlier coaching stint in Manhattan, Clements played a key role in developing several standout defensive players, including Meshak Williams, Adam Davis, and Jeff Fitzgerald. His reputation as a strong defensive mind helped solidify Kansas State’s defensive identity during some of the program’s most successful years.
After leaving Kansas State, Clements spent 12 seasons at Oklahoma State, where he gained further experience and eventually rose to the position of co-defensive coordinator during his final two years with the program. Despite his contributions, a coaching reshuffle by Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy led to Clements’ departure, a decision that surprised many Oklahoma State supporters who believed the team’s issues extended beyond the defensive staff.
Now back in Manhattan, Clements’ return is seen as both symbolic and strategic. His deep familiarity with the program and strong relationship with Klein—who played at Kansas State while Clements was on staff—adds another experienced voice to the coaching operation.
