Breaking: Just In, Cubs Reunites With $11 Million Pitcher To Address Their Rotation

The Chicago Cubs are expected to pursue pitching help as the trade deadline approaches. While bolstering the starting rotation is likely on their radar, most playoff hopefuls also target bullpen reinforcements this time of year. With the Boston Red Sox trending downward, veteran closer Aroldis Chapman may not be with the team much longer. According to MLB insider Bob Nightengale, it’s only a matter of time before Chapman is moved: “Scouts are already monitoring Boston Red Sox reliever Aroldis Chapman, who will be a hot trade target if Boston falls out of the AL East race,” Nightengale wrote.

And that scenario seems increasingly likely. As of Sunday, the Red Sox trailed the Yankees by 8.5 games and sat four games below .500. A potential return to the Cubs would make sense for both sides. Chapman, who helped lead Chicago to a World Series title in 2016, is still delivering at a high level at age 37. This season, he’s converted nine of 10 save opportunities, owns a 1.88 ERA, and has tallied 32 strikeouts. On a more competitive team, that save total would likely be higher.

The Cubs could use an additional late-inning option to support Drew Pomeranz, Daniel Palencia, and Brad Keller—each of whom has been solid—but manager Craig Counsell knows a deep bullpen is crucial for a postseason run. Chicago would be on the hook for the remainder of Chapman’s $10.75 million salary, a cost they should be willing to absorb. Beyond his production, Chapman brings invaluable postseason and championship experience, making him an ideal clubhouse addition. If the Cubs are serious about contending with teams like the Mets and Dodgers come October, acquiring Chapman should be a top priority.
