The Chicago Cubs will almost certainly be searching for more offensive firepower this offseason. It’s highly unlikely that Kyle Tucker will return after last winter’s trade, leaving a notable gap in the lineup. At the same time, Chicago seems to be targeting another All-Star third baseman.

According to Patrick Mooney and Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic, the Cubs have renewed their interest in signing Alex Bregman this offseason. Last year, Chicago came up short, losing out to the Boston Red Sox, who landed Bregman over the Cubs and Detroit.

With Tucker likely gone, the Cubs are making another push for Bregman. At 31, he offers the two-way production the team needs — strong offense combined with reliable infield play. The decision will likely come down to money again.

Boston may not have the payroll flexibility to retain Bregman, while Detroit appears ready to prioritize pitching despite their earlier interest. That could leave the Cubs well-positioned to make a compelling offer. If Chicago puts together a strong enough deal, Bregman could be wearing Cubs pinstripes at Wrigley Field in 2026.
