The Cincinnati Reds could surprisingly find themselves as buyers at this year’s trade deadline—but not in the same way as heavyweights like the Yankees or Dodgers. While those big-market clubs can afford to go all-in on short-term rentals to boost their postseason chances, the Reds aren’t in a position to take that same risk. That doesn’t mean Cincinnati has to sell, though. Instead, their strategy could involve pursuing players with multiple years of team control.
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Reds are showing “strong interest” in acquiring top-tier relievers who fit that profile. He specifically linked Cincinnati to Minnesota Twins bullpen standouts.
“The Philadelphia Phillies have been extensively scouting Minnesota Twins relievers… The Twins also are drawing strong interest from the Detroit Tigers, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Cincinnati Reds,” Nightengale reported.
The Reds make a compelling case as a trade partner. With Terry Francona now leading the dugout and star infielder Elly De La Cruz continuing to develop into a franchise cornerstone, Cincinnati has real incentive to push for a playoff berth. Adding Duran or Jax—both of whom are under club control beyond this season—would significantly strengthen their bullpen for both the present and future.
While such a trade would likely require parting with premium prospects—something historically out of character for the Reds’ front office—it could pay off. Even if the postseason doesn’t materialize this year, acquiring controllable bullpen arms like Jax or Duran would help position the Reds as a serious contender in the seasons ahead. It’s a bold strategy, but one that aligns with their current trajectory and competitive timeline.
