As the new year begins, the New York Mets still have not made any significant additions to their starting rotation for the upcoming season. While president of baseball operations David Stearns may be comfortable relying on a group of young pitchers, the team still needs to bring in at least one proven veteran capable of consistently providing innings. With few top-tier starters remaining on the market, the pressure is mounting for Stearns to act sooner rather than later.

One notable arm still available is Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Ranger Suárez, though he is widely expected to sign elsewhere. However, Fox Sports’ Rowan Kavner has projected the Mets as a potential landing spot, suggesting New York could swoop in and steal Suárez from a division rival. Kavner highlighted Suárez’s elite command, ability to generate soft contact, and effectiveness despite lacking overpowering velocity. He also noted Suárez’s postseason success, pointing to his 1.48 career ERA across 11 playoff appearances, including eight starts, as a valuable trait for a Mets rotation that struggled with hard contact and finished 18th in ERA last season.

Given the significant roster turnover in Queens this offseason, Kavner argued it would be surprising if the Mets failed to land one of the top remaining starters on the market. Suárez would likely step in near the top of the rotation, offering hitters a different look and bringing valuable experience in the National League East. The veteran lefty posted a 3.20 ERA with the Phillies last season and is well-acquainted with division opponents.
Reports have consistently indicated that the Mets are reluctant to commit to long-term deals for starting pitchers. If that approach holds, New York would likely need to compensate with a higher average annual value to secure Suárez, potentially structuring a short-term contract with multiple opt-outs similar to the deal Alex Bregman signed with the Boston Red Sox last season.
