The Phillies announced a pair of roster moves, releasing pitcher while placing another top star on the 15-day injured list with inflammation in his right middle finger. To fill the vacancies, the team recalled Daniel Robert from Triple-A Lehigh Valley and added Lou Trivino to the 40-man roster before calling him up. Trivino, who signed a minor league deal with Philadelphia earlier this year, has already seen time this season with both the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers. Before 2025, however, he hadn’t appeared in a big league game since 2022.
Ross wrapped up his Phillies stint with a 2–1 record and a 5.12 ERA across 37 appearances. His underlying numbers included a 4.86 FIP, a 2.17 strikeout-to-walk ratio, and a 1.471 WHIP, along with a 1.41 home runs allowed per nine innings and a 13.3% home run-to-fly ball rate. Philadelphia had brought him in on a one-year deal last offseason, but the club has now chosen to cut ties. The timing of his release is somewhat surprising given Jordan Romano’s struggles. Romano’s performance has been even worse, and while he’s currently on the injured list, it seems unlikely he’ll pitch for the Phillies again — the IL move may simply be postponing an eventual separation.
Immediate Bullpen Implications
Robert had been putting together a solid stretch earlier this year, but his momentum stalled after giving up five runs over two innings in his last two big-league appearances. When Ross returned from the injured list, Robert landed on the IL himself. Across 12 outings this season, he owns a 5.79 ERA, a 5.90 FIP, and a 1.50 strikeout-to-walk ratio, along with a 1.821 WHIP, 1.93 home runs allowed per nine innings, and a 20.0% home run-to-fly ball rate. Notably, in his first 10 games, he surrendered only one earned run over 9 1/3 innings.
Meanwhile, Trivino has impressed since joining the Phillies’ system, posting a 0.00 ERA through six minor league outings with a 2.81 FIP, 2.33 strikeout-to-walk ratio, and a 1.143 WHIP. At the major league level this season, he has compiled a 3–1 record with a 4.42 ERA in 37 appearances — including two starts — split between the Giants and Dodgers. His big-league numbers also include a 5.03 FIP, a 2.23 strikeout-to-walk ratio, and a 1.371 WHIP. With Trivino promoted to fill Ross’s vacated spot on the 40-man roster, the roster remains at full capacity.
