Breaking News: Phillies to replace Alec Bohm with 2-time World Series champion, 3-time All-Star

Alex Bregman is shaping up to be one of the biggest names to monitor as the offseason unfolds. The veteran third baseman appears ready to finish his career on a high note and is likely seeking one final major contract. Following the conclusion of the season, Bregman is expected to opt out of his current deal.

“Alex Bregman plans to opt out of his contract with the Boston Red Sox, a source told ESPN on Tuesday night, confirming a New York Post report. The move was expected and doesn’t rule out the veteran third baseman returning to Boston, but for now, he will be part of the free agent class for a second straight offseason,” ESPN reported.

Bregman is expected to command a sizable contract wherever he lands, with comparisons already being made to Matt Chapman’s recent deal.

“Both Alex Speier of The Boston Globe and Tyler Milliken of WEEI suggested Matt Chapman’s contract as a comparison to what Bregman could get. The third baseman signed a bridge deal with the San Francisco Giants in 2024, posted a rebound season, then signed a six-year, $151 million extension,” wrote BoSox Injection’s Katie Manganelli.

Given his market value, Bregman could draw interest from multiple teams seeking an upgrade at third base, with the Philadelphia Phillies emerging as a particularly intriguing destination.

“After waiting out the winter for the right deal, Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million pact with the Red Sox that included $60 million in deferrals and opt-outs after 2025 and ’26. Injuries limited Bregman to only 114 games this season, but he performed well when he was available, posting an .822 OPS with 18 homers. Bregman plans to opt out of his contract, giving free agency a try for the second consecutive season. Potential fit: Phillies,” noted MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.

If the Phillies pursue Bregman, they would need to determine how Alec Bohm fits into their infield plans, as Bregman primarily plays third base. Although he has experience at other positions, he prefers to stay at the hot corner and is unlikely to sign with a team that doesn’t plan to use him there.

Philadelphia enters the offseason with significant financial flexibility and several major decisions to make, and there’s little doubt they have the resources to make another major splash.
