The New York Rangers announced a multi-year contract deal for general manager and president of hockey operations. This decision comes shortly after the firing of head coach Peter Laviolette, following a disappointing season in which the Rangers missed the playoffs. “I am pleased that he will continue to lead the Rangers hockey operations in his role as President and General Manager,” said James Dolan, MSG Sports Executive Chairman and CEO, in a statement. “Throughout his tenure, he has demonstrated a deep passion for the Rangers, a strong work ethic, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Although we are all disappointed by the events of this past season, I am confident in his ability to steer this organization toward success.”
Drury, who assumed the role in 2021, guided the Rangers to playoff appearances in each of his first three seasons. However, the team finished 39-36-7 in the 2024–25 season, missing the postseason by six points. “I am honored to sign this contract extension and continue in this role with the team I grew up supporting,” Drury said.
“There is no organization in hockey more special than this one, and I look forward to continuing our work this offseason to help us achieve our goals.” During the season, New York made a series of trades, including moving captain Jacob Trouba and former second-overall pick Kaapo Kakko. Drury took full accountability for the team’s downfall in a media session after Laviolette’s dismissal, especially following a strong season where New York won the Presidents’ Trophy with an NHL-best 55 points.

“After finishing with the best regular season record in the NHL last year and making it to the Eastern Conference Final, we had high expectations for ourselves this season,” Drury stated. “Simply put, we didn’t meet those expectations.
We all need to do better—including myself.” Looking ahead, Drury felt a coaching change was necessary to give the team the best chance to reach its goals. “Our search for a new head coach will begin immediately.” Drury now faces the task of finding the organization’s third head coach in four years, following David Quinn, Gerard Gallant, and Laviolette between the 2020-21 and 2024-25 seasons.
