Top star, a reliable and well-respected right wing known for his two-way play and consistency, has officially announced his retirement from professional hockey at the age of 33.
His statement reflected humility and gratitude:
“I never took for granted the privilege of playing in the best league in the world… I am grateful for all of the teammates, coaches, staff and fans from the Rangers and Hurricanes who made my time in the NHL so special…”
He retires with a legacy of dependability and professionalism. A sixth-round pick by the New York Rangers in the 2010 NHL Draft (157th overall), he carved out a remarkable 11-season career, playing 703 regular-season games and contributing 248 points (91 goals, 157 assists) with a strong +41 rating. He also appeared in 80 Stanley Cup Playoff games, tallying 27 points.
He began his NHL journey with the Rangers, where he became a fan favorite and team leader, winning the Players’ Player Award five consecutive seasons (2015–2020)—an honor voted on by teammates. He served as an alternate captain for the club from 2017–2020.
After signing with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2020, Fast enjoyed a career-best season in 2021–22, posting highs in goals (14), points (34), games played (82), and plus/minus (+24). That season, he was awarded the Steve Chiasson Award for exemplifying dedication and inspiration.
Perhaps most memorably, Fast emerged as a clutch playoff performer, delivering multiple overtime winners during the Hurricanes’ 2023 postseason run—including a series-clinching goal against the Devils in Round 2.
Fast’s career was unfortunately cut short by a serious neck injury suffered in the final regular-season game of 2023–24. He missed the entire 2024–25 campaign as a result and now steps away from the game.
While never the flashiest player, Jesper Fast earned a reputation as a coach’s dream: a responsible, team-first forward who delivered in big moments and earned universal respect in the locker room. His retirement marks the end of a quietly exceptional NHL career.
Career NHL Totals:

- Assists: 157
- Points: 248
- Playoff Games: 80 (14 goals, 13 assists)

A model of perseverance and professionalism, Jesper Fast will be remembered fondly by both Rangers and Hurricanes fans.
