The San Antonio Spurs are expected to be aggressive this offseason as they continue building a roster tailored to maximize Victor Wembanyama’s immense talent. They’ve already made a splash by acquiring De’Aaron Fox—Wemby’s first elite teammate—but that appears to be just the beginning. The Spurs have been linked to stars like Kevin Durant, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Domantas Sabonis, although each comes with concerns about positional fit, cultural compatibility, and long-term alignment with Wembanyama’s timeline.
A more unconventional name has resurfaced as a potential target: veteran star. Though previously rumored as a possible fit in San Antonio, the addition of top star seemed to end that speculation. However, Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey recently suggested the idea isn’t entirely dead. He floated the possibility of the Spurs forming a three-guard lineup featuring Young, Fox, and rookie Stephon Castle.
“San Antonio could still get a little crazy and add Young’s immense playmaking talent,” Bailey wrote, noting the defensive versatility that Fox’s 6’6″ wingspan and Castle’s 6’9” reach could offer at the 2 and 3 spots. The idea is that such a trio could drastically simplify life on offense for Wembanyama with their collective ball-handling and passing skills.
Of course, spacing could be an issue, especially with Castle’s inconsistent outside shooting. For the deal to work financially and logistically, San Antonio might need to move on from players like Harrison Barnes, Keldon Johnson, Blake Wesley, and potentially part with their two 2025 first-round picks (both via Atlanta). That would elevate the importance of wings like Julian Champagnie and Devin Vassell in the rotation.
Still, while revisiting the Trae Young rumor is intriguing, the Spurs’ main focus this offseason remains strengthening their wing depth and adding a reliable backup center.
