Washington football got some unsurprising news regarding troubled wide receiver. The former Texas receiver transferred to the Huskies shortly after the Longhorns’ 2024 season concluded, but just two days later, it was revealed that he and the program had parted ways due to multiple team rules violations. Soon after, the sophomore was arrested twice in a two-week span—once for theft and once for marijuana possession. Given the circumstances, he was never expected to return to head coach Jedd Fisch’s squad, and it now appears his time with the team is officially over.
Jeff Fisch is looking to elevate Washington football back to familiar heights
It’s unfortunate for the Huskies that things didn’t pan out with Johntay Cook. A highly touted prospect out of DeSoto, Texas, Cook was ranked No. 38 overall in the 2023 recruiting class and came with plenty of upside. But ultimately, it wasn’t meant to be. Now, Washington turns its focus toward building momentum in its second season competing in the Big Ten. The program has seen significant transition recently, including the departure of former head coach Kalen DeBoer, who left for the Alabama job. In response, the Huskies brought in former Arizona head coach Jedd Fisch to lead the team moving forward.
Much like his debut season at Arizona, Jedd Fisch experienced some predictable growing pains in his first year leading the Huskies. Washington finished the year with a 6-7 overall record and a 4-5 mark in Big Ten play. It was a transitional season where both the offense and defense faced challenges. Notably, in matchups against ranked opponents, Washington managed to score more than 20 points just once—during a 49-21 loss to Oregon. The season served as a period of adjustment for a program still getting its footing in a new conference.
Still, Fisch has earned the benefit of the doubt. The Livingston, New Jersey native inherited a struggling Arizona program and turned it around, going from a 1-11 record in his first year to finishing as the No. 11 team in the nation by his third. At Washington, there are signs of a similar rebuild. The Huskies currently hold the No. 23-ranked recruiting class and are adding several impact transfers. Despite a tough schedule ahead, year two under Fisch appears poised to be a step forward—offering Husky fans plenty of reasons to feel hopeful.
