Breaking News: Vikings Receive New ‘Unexpected’ Aaron Rodgers Trade Update

Earlier in the 2025 NFL offseason, the Minnesota Vikings were frequently linked to future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers. However, they’ve since shifted focus toward the future, committing to rookie J.J. McCarthy as their starting quarterback. Rodgers remains a free agent. Although he’s long been rumored to be heading to the Pittsburgh Steelers, he has yet to officially sign a contract. His delay has raised questions, with some speculating that he’s waiting to see if another opportunity—perhaps outside of Pittsburgh—emerges. When Minnesota was considered a potential destination, it appeared Rodgers was interested in joining the Vikings. That has led to ongoing speculation that he might be holding out hope they change their minds.

Addressing those rumors, ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler offered an update during a recent appearance on the “Dan Patrick Show.” Fowler acknowledged there’s still some league chatter about whether Rodgers is waiting on the Vikings. “Some teams I’ve spoken with are wondering if he’s just holding out for Minnesota,” Fowler said, noting that the Vikings would offer an ideal situation: a top-tier play caller in head coach Kevin O’Connell and nine guaranteed dome games each season. However, Fowler added that after checking in with the Vikings, they remain committed to McCarthy. “I still don’t expect that,” he said. “They’re moving forward with J.J. McCarthy. So for Rodgers, it’s really Pittsburgh or retirement.”

Rodgers is expected to make a decision soon, especially with the Steelers’ mandatory minicamp beginning on June 10. While the idea of the 41-year-old suiting up for the Vikings and facing the Packers twice in 2025 was intriguing, that scenario appears off the table. The Vikings have made their choice, and McCarthy is their quarterback moving forward.
