The Philadelphia Phillies are off to a strong start this season, yet they’re not even close to playing their best baseball yet. Aside from Aaron Nola, the pitching staff has been outstanding, featuring Jesus Luzardo, Zack Wheeler, Cristopher Sánchez, and others.
The bullpen has been streaky, and it will be significantly worse in the coming months due to José Alvarado’s 80-game PED sentence. And the lineup has produced average results across the board. Alec Bohm has not found his swing this season. JT Realmuto has struggled at the plate. There are several talents that are still striving to get started this season.
Despite this, the Phillies remain one of baseball’s best teams, and they may only improve as the season progresses, particularly if they upgrade their roster before June 1.
Max Lazar’s days with Phillies might be numbered
Few players on the Phillies’ active roster appear to be in danger of losing their spot this season. The team has been carefully constructed, leaving little room for underperformance or inefficiency.
However, one player who seems likely to be sent down to the minors soon is pitcher Max Lazar. He’s only appeared in one game this season, giving up two runs over two innings, and allowed seven runs in 13 2/3 innings last year. Lazar has mainly served as a depth option, and with the team not needing extra innings coverage in the near future, his roster spot is vulnerable.

Once Aaron Nola is ready to come off the injured list, Lazar is the most probable candidate to be optioned. While Nola has had a rough season, his track record and contract will keep him in the rotation.
If Nola’s return is delayed, the Phillies might instead call up Mick Abel, who impressed in his major league debut despite earlier struggles in the minors. There’s also a chance that top prospect Andrew Painter could earn a promotion soon, provided he continues to perform well in his recovery from Tommy John surgery.
Regardless of the scenario, Lazar’s time on the active roster seems limited.
