The Philadelphia Phillies have a talented roster, but they’re still expected to be aggressive at the trade deadline—especially when it comes to upgrading their bullpen. The need is even more urgent after closer José Alvarado was suspended for 80 games and ruled out for the postseason.
Philadelphia’s bullpen has been a weak spot for years, and adding a reliable, long-term closer like Clase should be a top priority. With Alvarado sidelined for the playoffs, the Phillies are in desperate need of a ninth-inning anchor.
Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter has confirmed the Phillies as the trade destination for Cleveland Guardians star closer Emmanuel Clase. Clase has been dominant lately, posting a 1.20 ERA and 0.90 WHIP with 15 saves in 17 chances since early June. His contract becomes more expensive next year and includes two \$10 million club options after that, which could motivate Cleveland—a team mindful of payroll—to consider moving him and hand the closer role to Cade Smith.

If they get serious in the market, they could pursue Clase aggressively. That pursuit could require parting with top prospects like outfielder Justin Crawford or pitcher Mick Abel, but Clase would give them a high-level closer for years to come.
While the move might not be a perfect fit for the Guardians, the Phillies could make it work by offering a strong enough prospect package. Ultimately, it depends on how far Philadelphia is willing to go to land one of the best closers available.
