BREAKING: Phillies Land Top Special Replacement For Jose Alvarado Following Suspension

Philadelphia Phillies closer José Alvarado has been hit with an 80-game suspension, creating a significant void in the bullpen. The team now faces the challenge of identifying a replacement, either from within the organization or through external acquisition. While internal options could step up, many around the league anticipate that the Phillies will explore the market to strengthen the back end of their bullpen.

“I expect them to make a move to address the loss,” a National League executive told Mark Feinsand. “It might not be a high-profile closer, but they’ll likely add some depth to the bullpen.”

One name gaining traction is veteran reliever David Robertson, currently a free agent after spending time with the Texas Rangers. According to Feinsand, the Phillies reached out to Robertson even before Alvarado’s suspension was officially announced. Although discussions didn’t progress, a reunion with the 40-year-old—who’s already had two previous stints in Philadelphia—remains a possibility.

Robertson isn’t the only reliever drawing interest. Miami Marlins right-hander Anthony Bender is another potential target. He has posted an impressive 1.89 ERA in 19 appearances this season and is under team control through 2027. Marlins executive Peter Bendix has shown a willingness to deal players early, as seen with last year’s Luis Arraez trade, making Bender a realistic trade chip.

Another intriguing option is Dennis Santana of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Santana holds a 1.96 ERA and has four saves in 19 outings. Like Bender, he is relatively inexpensive and remains under team control for two more seasons. Baltimore Orioles reliever Bryan Baker is also performing well (2.37 ERA, 25 strikeouts in 19 innings) and could become a trade candidate given Baltimore’s bullpen depth.

Despite the blow dealt by Alvarado’s suspension, the Phillies are off to a strong start this season. With playoff aspirations in mind, addressing the bullpen vacancy will be key—and they have several viable paths to do so.
