The Outfielder has returned to the Philadelphia Phillies organization after briefly parting ways with them. Just over a week ago, he exercised his opt-out clause in a minor league contract he had originally signed back in February, allowing him to explore other opportunities. However, according to his transactions log on MLB.com, Mercado has now agreed to a fresh minor league deal with the Phillies.
Before opting out, Óscar Mercado spent the season at Triple-A, appearing in 92 games and logging 378 plate appearances. His plate discipline stood out, posting a 14.6% walk rate that narrowly exceeded his 13.8% strikeout rate. At the plate, he hit .252 with a .373 on-base percentage and a .385 slugging percentage, good for a 107 wRC+. He also displayed speed and defensive versatility, stealing 35 bases and covering all three outfield positions.
Despite the respectable numbers, Mercado was not promoted to the majors. The Phillies have relied primarily on an outfield core of Nick Castellanos, Brandon Marsh, and Max Kepler, with occasional contributions from others. At the trade deadline, the team added veteran Harrison Bader, further crowding the picture, while top prospect Justin Crawford continues to push for a call-up.
Given the current roster depth, Mercado’s route to a big-league role appears limited. After surveying the market for a few days and not finding a better fit, he chose to rejoin the Phillies. For now, he will serve as a non-roster depth option in the minors, with his path to the majors likely depending on multiple injuries within the big-league outfield.
