BREAKING: Raptors’ Darko Rajakovic makes clear declaration on Gradey Dick’s status

During his first two seasons in the NBA, Gradey Dick quickly carved out a role as a reliable rotation player for the Toronto Raptors. However, entering his third year, expectations around the team have shifted dramatically. The Raptors are no longer focused solely on rebuilding through the lottery—they now view themselves as a legitimate playoff contender aiming to compete with the league’s top teams.

With those heightened ambitions, Dick found himself slipping out of head coach Darko Rajaković’s regular rotation for much of the season. But on Sunday, the young guard made the most of his opportunity. In just 13 minutes on the floor, he contributed 10 points and delivered a performance that left a strong impression on his coach.

Rajaković was so encouraged by Dick’s effort that he confirmed the 23-year-old will now be a consistent part of the rotation moving forward.

“He’s in the rotation now. That should not change,” Rajaković said after the game. “There are high expectations for him. He needs to continue putting in the work because he’s a very, very important player for us. I have huge trust in him.”

The Raptors coach also praised how Dick handled the challenge of being moved in and out of the lineup throughout the season.

“He handled it in the best possible way,” Rajaković explained. “He went back and worked even harder. He was coming in at night to shoot, arriving early every morning to get extra shots up and putting in the work.”

Toronto selected Dick with the 13th overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, and he quickly became a regular starter early in his career, making 71 starts across his first two seasons. This year, however, opportunities have been far more limited, with the sharpshooting guard starting only once.

For many young players, such a setback could have been discouraging and potentially damaging to their confidence. But Dick responded in the opposite fashion. Rather than allowing the reduced role to frustrate him, he doubled down on his preparation and effort—an approach that ultimately earned the respect of his coaching staff and helped secure his return to the Raptors’ rotation.
