BREAKING: Ravens finally make long-term investment Lamar Jackson has been waiting for

The Baltimore Ravens identified offensive guard as their biggest remaining need after landing edge rusher Maxx Crosby earlier in the offseason. When the NFL’s legal tampering window opened Monday, Baltimore moved quickly to fill that gap by reaching an agreement with offensive lineman John Simpson on a three year contract worth $30 million.

Simpson returns to Baltimore after spending the previous two seasons with the New York Jets, with the deal reportedly negotiated by Kyle Strongin of Range Sports.

Over the past two seasons, Baltimore had essentially patched together the guard position while focusing resources elsewhere on the roster. That temporary approach barely held up in 2024 and completely unraveled in 2025.

The Ravens ended last season with an 8–9 record and missed the postseason, and the struggles along the interior offensive line played a major role in that outcome. Quarterback Lamar Jackson battled injuries throughout the year and was sidelined for four games, with inconsistent protection frequently putting him under pressure. Recognizing the need to better safeguard their franchise quarterback, the front office prioritized reinforcing the line, making Simpson a key addition.

Simpson may not be the flashiest name on the market, but he was widely viewed as one of the top guard options available. Veteran free agents such as Kevin Zeitler and Joel Bitonio were also possibilities, but both players are approaching the latter stages of their careers. Baltimore instead opted for a longer term solution rather than another short term stopgap.

At 28 years old, Simpson fits that vision. His presence should help stabilize the interior line over the next three seasons while also bringing familiarity with Jackson’s playing style, something that could prove valuable as Baltimore aims to revitalize its offense in 2026.

If Simpson settles in at left guard, he will once again line up next to left tackle Ronnie Stanley. The pair previously anchored the left side of Baltimore’s offensive line during the 2023 season, helping create stronger protection and run blocking for Jackson and the offense. Reuniting that combination could help restore the physical edge the Ravens have long relied on in the trenches.

However, the team now faces another significant challenge along the offensive line. Shortly after Simpson’s signing, Baltimore lost three time Pro Bowl center Tyler Linderbaum, who agreed to a massive three year, $81 million contract with the Las Vegas Raiders. While the Ravens reportedly presented a competitive offer, the Raiders’ market setting deal ultimately proved too rich for Baltimore to match.

Even with that setback, bringing Simpson back into the fold represents a meaningful step toward rebuilding the offensive line. As the Ravens continue reshaping the roster this offseason, strengthening the trenches remains a central priority for a team determined to bounce back next year.
