Breaking: Red Sox All-star Pitcher Nears Return from Injury

Things are starting to look promising for Boston Red Sox as their standing Pitcher works his way back from injury.

The 25-year-old righty was placed on the injured list on April 13 due to a strained pectoral muscle. However, he was slated to throw his first bullpen session on Monday and was spotted playing long toss on Sunday before Boston’s game against the Minnesota Twins.

He was one of three pitchers acquired from the New York Yankees last offseason in the trade for Alex Verdugo. Though not a high-profile addition, he quietly became a valuable contributor to the Red Sox rotation.

He opened the season with two consecutive quality starts, despite taking the loss in both outings. In his third start, Fitts pitched five shutout innings against the White Sox before leaving early and landing on the IL. So far this season, he has posted a 3.18 ERA, a 1.118 WHIP, and recorded 13 strikeouts over 17 innings.

However, once Fitts is fully recovered, there may not be room for him in the starting rotation. Walker Buehler is expected to return soon from shoulder bursitis, and Lucas Giolito’s eventual comeback will leave the rotation at full strength.

While that might push Fitts out of a starting role, he’s proven to be a reliable depth option who’s ready to step up when needed.
