As the regular season winds down and postseason hopes hang in the balance, frustration is mounting for Auburn Tigers men’s basketball. Saturday night’s 85-79 loss to Ole Miss Rebels men’s basketball marked the team’s seventh defeat in its last eight games, a brutal stretch that has placed Auburn squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble heading toward Selection Sunday.
Following the setback, first-year head coach Steven Pearl delivered an unusually short postgame press conference that lasted just under three minutes. Despite the brevity, he touched on several critical issues, beginning with a direct message to supporters.

Pearl opened by apologizing to the Auburn fan base for the team’s recent performances before breaking down what went wrong against the Rebels. A key factor, he noted, was Ole Miss’ unexpected success from beyond the arc. A team that has struggled from three-point range for much of the season connected on 10 shots from deep, a difference-maker in a tightly contested game.

He also addressed a lineup decision that raised eyebrows. Forward KeShawn Murphy, a transfer from Mississippi State, did not start the game. Pearl clarified the move, explaining that Murphy had been late to a team film session earlier in the week, which led to the disciplinary decision.
On the floor, Auburn kept pace for most of the night, trading baskets with the Rebels well into the second half. However, the Tigers unraveled late, undone by 14 turnovers and eight missed free throws that ultimately proved too much to overcome.
Now sitting at 15-14 overall, Auburn faces a razor-thin margin for error. A struggling LSU team visits next, followed by the Tigers’ annual road trip to Tuscaloosa. With their postseason fate uncertain, Auburn likely needs strong finishes in both contests to steady its résumé and restore confidence heading into March.
