Sunderland and Sporting CP are both in the hunt to sign UD Almería striker Luis Suárez this summer, according to Thursday’s edition of Diario de Almería.
Sources close to the Spanish club have confirmed that “talks are ongoing with multiple clubs” regarding a potential move for the 27-year-old Colombian, who scored an impressive 31 goals and registered eight assists last season. Despite his individual brilliance, Almería failed to secure promotion back to La Liga.
Currently, both Sunderland and Sporting have shown serious interest in the former Watford forward. Sporting view Suárez as a possible replacement for Viktor Gyökeres, who is reportedly keen on a transfer to Arsenal.
The report notes that Portuguese outlets have described Almería’s €25 million asking price as “excessive.” However, in recent hours, Sunderland have reportedly entered the race and appear more willing to meet the Spanish side’s valuation.
While Sporting offer the allure of Champions League football and regular title contention, Régis Le Bris and his Sunderland staff are said to be uncertain about the player’s preferences, believing Suárez would likely favor a move to Lisbon over a switch to the Stadium of Light.

Almería originally paid €8 million to sign Suárez from Marseille in 2023, and a €25 million sale would represent a substantial profit.
The local media in Almería are emphasizing Sunderland’s interest and their potential willingness to meet the full price tag. Meanwhile, the Portuguese press remain skeptical about the valuation, prompting speculation that Almería may be using Sunderland’s reported interest to pressure Sporting into raising their bid.
