BREAKING: Tar Heels Hit With Tough Blow as Sophomore Star Lands With New Program

Change was always expected once the offseason began in Chapel Hill, and for one North Carolina guard, that transition has now taken a turn that Tar Heel supporters won’t be thrilled about. The transfer portal has already started reshaping rosters across the country, and this particular move feels like one that could sting a bit more than most. With roster adjustments underway and new coaching dynamics settling in, it became increasingly clear that at least one familiar face would be heading elsewhere in search of a better opportunity.

Over the past few weeks, there had been growing speculation that Jonathan Powell’s time in Chapel Hill was coming to an end. His role never quite matched expectations, and as the offseason unfolded, the possibility of a fresh start seemed more likely by the day. That speculation officially turned into reality over the weekend, marking the first departure from last season’s Tar Heels roster to result in a commitment to another program. Unfortunately for North Carolina fans, the landing spot only adds to the disappointment.

Jonathan Powell has officially committed to play for head coach Jeff Capel and the Pittsburgh Panthers, according to a report from Joe Tipton of On3. The move gives Powell a new opportunity while preserving two remaining seasons of eligibility as he looks to reestablish himself.

Pitt lands UNC transfer guard Jonathan Powell

Powell’s college journey has already featured multiple stops. He began his career at West Virginia, where he earned significant playing time as a freshman and operated primarily in a starting role. That early success led him to transfer to North Carolina, where expectations were high for him to carve out a meaningful spot in the rotation. While he did see consistent minutes, his role was noticeably reduced compared to his time with the Mountaineers.

The numbers reflect that shift. As a sophomore, Powell attempted 112 fewer shots than he did during his freshman campaign. Despite the drop in usage, his shooting efficiency remained remarkably steady, reinforcing the idea that his skill set translated well even in a smaller role. Still, the reduced opportunities suggested that he might eventually look elsewhere for a larger platform.

That appears to be exactly what happened. Seeking a bigger role and a system that better fits his strengths, Powell quickly found common ground with Capel and the Panthers. The decision also continues an interesting trend, as Powell has now transferred following head coaching changes at both of his previous programs.

Meanwhile, Capel enters a pivotal stretch at Pittsburgh, with increasing pressure surrounding the program heading into the 2026–27 season. While no one is rooting against him, the urgency to deliver results is undeniable.

As for Powell, his time in Chapel Hill leaves behind a sense of what could have been. Many believed he had the potential to take on a larger role, but that opportunity never fully materialized. Now at Pittsburgh, he’ll be aiming to unlock that untapped potential and prove he can thrive when given the chance to do more.
