Breaking: Washington Huskies land blockbuster commitment from defensive weapon

Washington’s football staff has continued to prioritize recruiting within the state under coach Jedd Fisch, and that approach is already paying dividends for future classes.

After signing five Washington natives in the 2025 cycle and adding six more local players during the early signing period for 2026, the Huskies have turned their attention to 2027. That focus produced another result when Maurice Williams announced his commitment to Washington.

Williams, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound cornerback from Graham-Kapowsin High School, revealed his decision through a series of social media posts. He becomes the second pledge in UW’s 2027 class, joining wide receiver Braylon Pope of Sumner, who committed earlier this month.

Huskies Will Need Another Starting Wide Receiver

Currently rated as a three-star recruit by the 247Sports composite, Williams is ranked among the top players in the state of Washington and is considered one of the nation’s top cornerbacks for the 2027 cycle. He chose the Huskies over offers from programs including Arizona State, BYU, Washington State, and several other Pac-12 and Mountain West schools.

Williams transferred to Graham-Kapowsin after spending his first two high school seasons at Yelm High School. His development has been steady and productive. As a freshman in 2023, he earned second-team South Sound Conference honors, followed by first-team Class 4A All-South Puget Sound League recognition as a sophomore in 2024. In his junior season, his first with the Eagles, Williams again made first-team All-SPSL and helped lead Graham-Kapowsin to the Class 4A state semifinals.

His physical profile closely matches the cornerbacks Washington signed in the 2026 class, aligning with the size and weight the coaching staff has targeted at the position. That need is amplified by recent roster turnover, as both starting cornerbacks from the 2025 season have moved on, and another contributor entered the transfer portal shortly after the LA Bowl.

Looking ahead, Washington will return several young defensive backs in 2026 and may also explore portal additions. Still, securing a commitment from Williams strengthens the long-term outlook.

With Williams on board, the Huskies now hold commitments from two of the state’s top seven prospects in the 2027 cycle, reinforcing their early success in keeping elite local talent at home.
