Colorado head coach Deion Sanders has revitalized the Buffaloes football program over the past few years, turning it into one of the most talked-about teams in the country. With stars Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter heading to the 2025 NFL Draft, Coach Prime made headlines again with a bold move—retiring both players’ jersey numbers. The decision drew mixed reactions, with some fans applauding it and others questioning the timing.
In a weekend filled with significant announcements, Colorado also revealed a posthumous honor for legendary former head coach Bill McCartney. McCartney led the Buffaloes from 1982 to 1994, compiling a 93-55-5 record and guiding the team to its only national championship in 1990. Sadly, McCartney passed away in January and won’t be able to witness the tribute. Sanders didn’t hide his frustration about the delay in honoring McCartney, expressing his disappointment that the recognition didn’t come while the coach was still alive.
“I’m gonna try not to get in trouble with what I’m about to say,” Sanders began. “Why we waiting, man? Why we wait? Wouldn’t we have wanted him to see? To be involved in it. To feel it. To feel the love, the respect, the appreciation. Why we wait?” He challenged others to consider the importance of celebrating people while they’re still here to feel the impact.

Sanders, never shy about sharing his emotions, continued his plea with a heartfelt message: “Give people the flowers while they can enjoy ’em and they can smell ’em. That’s how I get down.” His words serve as a powerful reminder to acknowledge and honor greatness in real time—not after it’s too late.
