Done Deal: East Carolina Sign Another Deal With Promising Head Coach

East Carolina head coach signed a one-year contract extension, keeping him with the program through the 2027–28 season.

The extension was approved by the university’s board of trustees on Friday and officially announced by the school Saturday morning.

Under his leadership last season, the Pirates finished with a 19-14 overall record and a 10-8 mark in the American Athletic Conference—setting a new program record for regular-season wins in their 61-year Division I history. It also marked only the second time since 1997–98 that ECU posted a winning record in conference play.

“We’re excited about the direction our basketball program is headed with Mike Schwartz at the helm,” ECU athletic director Jon Gilbert said in a statement. “After a historic season, we remain committed to taking this program to the next level. In today’s evolving college athletics landscape, Mike’s vision and strategic approach have positioned ECU to attract top-tier talent and continue building a program we can all be proud of.”

Schwartz, 48, holds a 50-49 record over three seasons with ECU. He was named the 24th head coach in the school’s history on March 16, 2022.

“I’m extremely grateful to Chancellor Philip Rogers and Jon Gilbert for their ongoing support,” Schwartz said. “Being part of Pirate Nation and this incredible community means a great deal to me. Our staff and players are fully committed to the work it takes to succeed at a high level. We’re continuing to strengthen our roster with high-character student-athletes who will positively contribute to our culture and goals.”
