Duke practice player goes viral for being mysterious presence on bench vs. Seminoles

An unfamiliar face caught plenty of attention as the Duke Blue Devils squared off against the Florida State Seminoles in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals.

During the matchup, fans noticed a player who seemed to appear out of nowhere sitting at the end of Duke’s bench. The mystery figure was positioned beside Caleb Foster and Patrick Ngongba II, leaving many viewers wondering who exactly had joined the Blue Devils’ sideline.

The answer was quickly revealed. The player was a practice squad member whom head coach Jon Scheyer elevated to the active roster because Duke is currently dealing with multiple injuries.

His name? Brock Davis, the son of former Blue Devils standout and two-time NCAA champion forward Brian Davis.

Brock Davis upgraded to full-time status for Blue Devils

Davis, now a senior at Duke, had previously worked with the team as a practice player. Because he had never appeared on the bench before, many Duke supporters were unfamiliar with him until his appearance during the quarterfinal game.

Basketball legacy runs in the Davis family. His father, Brian Davis, played a key role in Duke’s national championship teams in 1991 and 1992. Following his college career, he was selected 48th overall by the Phoenix Suns in the 1992 NBA Draft. Although he did not enjoy a lengthy NBA career, Brian Davis secured his place in Duke history long before leaving Durham thanks to his contributions to those championship squads.

More than 30 years after his father helped lead the Blue Devils to national titles, Brock Davis now finds himself on the sideline as Duke pursues another championship run. The program has been chasing its next national title since winning it all in 2015.

While it appeared unlikely that Davis would see playing time in the quarterfinal matchup, his unexpected presence still caught the attention of the Blue Devil fan base as they watched their team battle the Seminoles.
