Ground Game Alert: Giants Bring in Run-Game Guru to Fix Biggest Offensive Weakness

John Harbaugh is completing his coaching staff with the New York Giants, bringing in key assistants who played a major role in his long-term success in Baltimore. Shortly after securing Matt Nagy as offensive coordinator, The Athletic’s Charlotte Carroll reported that the Giants are adding experienced coach Greg Roman to the team.

Art Stapleton of North Jersey reports that Greg Roman will join Harbaugh’s staff as a senior offensive assistant. While Stapleton had previously suggested Roman might serve as the run game coordinator, that isn’t his official designation; nonetheless, he is expected to play a central role in shaping the Giants’ ground attack.

Roman’s track record highlights his expertise in the running game. As Baltimore’s offensive coordinator under Harbaugh from 2019 to 2022, his units consistently ranked among the NFL’s top three in rushing yards per game, including a standout 2019 season when the Ravens set the league’s single-season rushing record with 3,296 yards.

While Matt Nagy will oversee the overall offensive strategy, Roman’s specialized knowledge in heavy personnel packages and inventive run-blocking schemes will be key for a Giants rushing attack that ranked fifth in the league last season but struggled to produce consistently explosive plays from the backfield.

Roman also has a knack for transforming athletic quarterbacks into dynamic dual-threat playmakers—a skill that could greatly benefit rising QB Jaxson Dart. In his rookie year, Dart set a franchise record for quarterbacks with nine rushing touchdowns.

Roman’s offenses have historically faced challenges in the passing game, which contributed to his departures as offensive coordinator in both Baltimore and with the Los Angeles Chargers. Nevertheless, both Harbaugh brothers—John with the Ravens and Jim with the Chargers—hold Roman in high regard, particularly for his expertise in coordinating the run, even if long-term success as a full-time offensive coordinator has eluded him.

On the other side, Matt Nagy has struggled at times to consistently manage an effective running game during his career as a play-caller. Adding Roman to the Giants’ staff addresses this weakness, allowing Nagy to focus on his strengths in the passing game while ensuring the team’s rushing attack remains elite.

For second-year running back Cam Skattebo, Roman’s arrival is like giving a power hitter a bigger bat. Skattebo’s rookie campaign showcased his downhill, punishing running style, as he tallied 410 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 101 carries across just eight games, leading all NFL rookies in yards from scrimmage through the first half of 2025.

Roman’s emphasis on heavy personnel and gap-scheme blocking perfectly complements Skattebo’s 220-pound frame and elite 4.1 yards-after-contact average. With Roman in place, the Giants are setting up their young back for a breakout sophomore season—one in which his pass-catching ability (207 receiving yards in 2025) and physical, third-down rushing style could combine for a standout year in Matt Nagy’s revamped offense.
