Huge Boost: Phillies Top Experienced All-Star Veteran Makes Big Return From Injury

Phillies manager Rob Thomson now has an additional right-handed hitter at his disposal.

The Philadelphia Phillies have activated versatile player from the 10-day injured list. To make space on the 26-man roster, Kody Clemens — who is out of minor league options — was designated for assignment.

He strained his left oblique during spring training, which kept him out of the competition for the final bench spot and allowed the left-handed Clemens to win the role over fellow righty Buddy Kennedy.

Weston Wilson recently wrapped up a 10-game rehab stint across Single-A Clearwater and Triple-A Lehigh Valley, making appearances in left field (six games), first base, second base, and third base (one game each). He recorded six hits and drew walks in 17.4% of his 46 plate appearances.

Since 2023, Wilson has played in 48 games for the Phillies, hitting .288 with an .865 OPS. Last year, he hit 11 extra-base hits with a .284 average and an .836 OPS in 40 games, thriving against left-handed pitching with a 1.025 OPS in 51 plate appearances.

Wilson’s right-handed bat brings balance to the Phillies’ lineup, which leans heavily left. Although Clemens won a roster spot in spring training, his left-handed bat wasn’t an ideal fit. Club president Dave Dombrowski had noted in March that they didn’t anticipate using Kennedy much early on, so Clemens — who was out of options — remained with the team.

Clemens saw limited action this season, appearing in seven games exclusively as a pinch-hitter, going 0-for-6 with one walk. Wilson’s return offers Thomson a flexible, right-handed option against lefties.
