Alex Bregman is a notable name in 2017 free agency class due to his experience and leadership. The 32-year-old infielder is seeking for a place where he can effectively complete his Major League Baseball career. Bregman has officially opted out of his contract with the Boston Red Sox.

“Alex Bregman has officially opted out of his contract with the Red Sox, according to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe.” Bregman will return to free agency, putting the last two years and $80 million (including $40 million in deferred money) of the contract he signed with Boston last offseason on the table, according to MLB Trade Rumors’ Nick Deeds.

Bregman is set for a profitable summer, which might put him on a World Series-caliber squad.
“Both Alex Speier of The Boston Globe and Tyler Milliken of WEEI used Matt Chapman’s deal as an example of what Bregman may expect. “The third baseman signed a bridge deal with the San Francisco Giants in 2024, had a rebound season, and then signed a six-year, $151 million extension,” BoSox Injection’s Katie Manganelli said.
According to Deadspin’s David Brown, Bregman might wind up playing for the Philadelphia Phillies.

“Bregman is expected to opt out of his contract with the Red Sox soon, which should lead to more free-agent bidders this time around because a qualifying-offer draft pick will no longer be attached.” Brown stated, “He turns 32 in March, still plays solid defense at third, was one of the top 12-15% hitters in the league overall, and remains a clubhouse leader.”
Adding Bregman would be a significant help for the Phillies. He adds a seasoned presence, leadership, and championship pedigree, which might be the missing element that keeps them from winning the World Series.

Philadelphia has long desired another championship, and Bregman may be the trigger to bring it back to the City of Brotherly Love.
