Wes Miller assembling a Charlotte staff filled with Tar Heel roots
As coaching changes ripple across college basketball, familiar connections often shape the next wave of opportunities. That trend is becoming increasingly clear at Charlotte, where Wes Miller appears to be leaning heavily on his North Carolina ties to build a trusted inner circle. What began with one notable addition is quickly turning into a pattern, and it now looks like another former Tar Heel could be on his way to join the project.
Building a staff of former Tar Heels
Wes Miller seems to be building a coaching staff of former Tar Heels at Charlotte! First it was Marcus Paige, now it appears that Sean May is following him out of Chapel Hill.
According to Cameron Williams of The Charlotte Post, the same reporter who initially broke the news about Paige, there is growing belief that May will also be added to Miller’s staff at Charlotte. The move would further strengthen the Tar Heel influence within the program.
While that approach may no longer define the direction in Chapel Hill, Miller is clearly embracing it in his new role. After spending five seasons at Cincinnati, Miller was relieved of his duties as head coach but quickly found a new opportunity.
Not long after agreeing to become Charlotte’s head coach, Miller began assembling his staff. His first move was bringing in Paige from North Carolina, and now he appears close to adding Sean May as well, continuing the trend of reuniting with familiar faces.

A great opportunity for May
In the coaching profession, growth often comes from new challenges and expanded responsibilities, and this move could represent a significant step forward for Sean May.
May has been part of North Carolina’s program since 2015. He initially served as director of player development for two years before transitioning into the Director of Basketball Operations role in 2017, a position he held until April 2021.
When Hubert Davis took over as head coach, May earned a promotion to the bench, becoming one of three assistant coaches on Davis’ inaugural staff. He remained in that role until Davis’ departure, with many hoping that both May and Paige would be retained under the incoming leadership.
That scenario now appears unlikely, but the opportunity at Charlotte could provide May with valuable experience and a chance to further develop his coaching résumé.

Another bittersweet departure coming
May has long been a beloved figure in Chapel Hill, and his potential exit will certainly be felt. Even so, Tar Heel supporters are expected to rally behind the group of alumni projected to unite at Charlotte, hopeful that their shared history will translate into success as they continue advancing their coaching careers.
