After a disappointing home loss to Kentucky, the Auburn Tigers announced they were parting ways with head coach Hugh Freeze in his third season on the Plains. Freeze’s time at Auburn was filled with ups and downs — highlighted by strong recruiting success but overshadowed by inconsistent on-field results.

Even with a talented roster in Year 3, Freeze’s offense never found its rhythm. The Tigers rotated quarterbacks throughout the season, and Freeze frequently pointed to how “close” the team was to turning things around — a turnaround that ultimately never came.

With Freeze’s departure, defensive coordinator DJ Durkin has been named interim head coach, a move that comes as little surprise given how dominant his defense has been this year. Players have voiced their full support for Durkin since the announcement.
“Coach Durkin is probably the best coach we have on our staff,” said pass rusher Keyron Crawford, via Auburn Undercover. “He’s always enthusiastic, always bringing energy and effort — everything you want from a head coach or defensive coordinator. He’s just a great person overall.”

Players were informed of Durkin’s promotion during a team meeting, shortly after Freeze’s firing.
“There was a lot of excitement,” said defensive end Keldric Faulk. “We love Durkin. Everybody respects him. He’s a great motivator and teacher.”

Support for Durkin extends beyond the defense.
“He’s very passionate about what he does,” said wide receiver Perry Thompson. “He’s aggressive and wants us to attack every play, no matter who we’re facing.”

The Tigers, now under interim head coach DJ Durkin, will look to bounce back this Saturday on the road against Vanderbilt.
