As the 2025 NFL season approaches, the Buffalo Bills are once again projected to be among the league’s top Super Bowl contenders. After falling just short in the AFC Championship Game against the Kansas City Chiefs last season, Buffalo has had a noteworthy offseason. One of the biggest storylines has centered around running back and his uncertain future with the team. Top star has been seeking a new contract, but negotiations have reportedly stalled, creating tension and fueling speculation about his possible departure.
Trade rumors have swirled, with some insiders suggesting he could either be dealt before the season or leave in free agency next year. While a resolution is still possible—both sides could agree on a deal that satisfies everyone—a recent prediction casts further doubt on Cook’s long-term future in Buffalo. Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine recently examined each NFL team’s most valuable trade assets heading into 2025, and Cook was listed as a key asset for the Bills. That doesn’t guarantee a trade, but it reinforces the idea that he’s a player worth watching closely.
“Fortunately for Beane and company, there aren’t many question marks surrounding one of the league’s most potent offenses,” Ballentine noted. “Josh Allen continues to make things work with the talent around him, but the biggest concern right now is whether James Cook gets an extension or if a holdout looms.” Cook’s numbers from last season only add to his value—he rushed for 1,009 yards and 16 touchdowns on 207 carries (a 4.9-yard average), and added 258 receiving yards and two more scores on 32 receptions.

There’s no doubt that Cook could make an impact for any number of teams around the league, but Buffalo would certainly prefer to retain him on a team-friendly deal. If negotiations remain at a standstill, however, the front office may have to explore trade options. Should Cook remain with the Bills for the 2025 season, he’ll be a vital part of their offensive game plan and a key contributor to their championship ambitions.
