Even though Joey Bosa was brought in during free agency, there’s a real possibility he could start the season on the sidelines for the Buffalo Bills.
When Bosa signed his \$9 million deal, many expected the former Pro Bowl pass rusher to immediately slot into the starting lineup of Buffalo’s strong defense. However, that assumption may not hold up.
After dealing with multiple injuries during his time with the Los Angeles Chargers, the 29-year-old’s durability is now a major concern. These setbacks have hindered his growth and raised doubts about his ability to stay on the field.
That’s why Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton suggests Bosa might not open the season as a starter and could be placed on a limited snap count.
“The other side of the ball is a different story, though. Epenesa will have to fend off free-agent signing Joey Bosa, who Buffalo might want to keep on a pitch count to begin the season,” Moton said.
Buffalo’s depth on the edge gives them flexibility—they don’t have to rely heavily on Bosa right away, even with the significant investment they made in him. Still, he was signed to be a key veteran presence, and there are expectations he’ll make an impact. If he falls short, it would reflect yet another miss in the Bills’ long-running search for consistent pass rush help.
Ultimately, limiting Bosa’s workload early may be part of a bigger strategy.
Buffalo is focused on making a Super Bowl run, and they’d rather have Bosa healthy and effective down the stretch than worn down early in the year.
