Chaim Bloom has quickly demonstrated that the St. Louis Cardinals’ offseason will be different.
Last summer, St. Louis made it clear that it wanted to move several of their veterans, including Nolan Arenado. However, the Cardinals were unable to close any significant transactions, so their roster was fairly identical to that of the 2024 squad going into the 2025 season. Early in this offseason, Bloom also stated that the Cardinals would be looking to make trades.

By trading Sonny Gray to the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday, the Cardinals achieved one of their objectives. Bloom then discussed the organization’s necessary adjustments. According to MLB.com’s John Denton, he avoided using the phrase “rebuild,” instead focusing on the team’s need to “attack” this offseason.

Bloom stated, as recorded by Denton, “Nobody who enters this game has any guarantees, but I feel the more fully we commit to what we need to do, the better it will go and the quicker we will get there.” “I don’t think this is just a matter of patience. I see it as something that needs to be addressed immediately and on a daily basis.

Rebuilding or resetting is always a bit of a bother. As a result, athletes are ultimately relocated with an eye on the future. In this instance, it seems clear that having Gray on the 2026 squad would have been beneficial. Over the past two seasons, he has been the team’s top pitcher, but they are making short-term sacrifices in order to reap long-term benefits.

Bloom’s messages have differed from those of the previous front office, at the very least. He is talking about being aggressive rather than being patient. The Cardinals have only made one high-value deal this summer. More seem to be on the way and may arrive soon.
