Just In: Cubs Confirm Surprising Decision on Two-Time Gold Glove Infielder

The Chicago Cubs are aiming to return to the playoffs this season and could make a surprising move regarding a fan favorite.

Nico Hoerner has been an essential part of the Cubs lineup, and while his name surfaced in trade rumors this offseason, he ultimately wasn’t moved. Now, Cubs insider Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic suggests Chicago might pursue a contract extension for him before the season starts.

“The Cubs have three key position players who will become free agents after this season: Ian Happ, Seiya Suzuki, and Nico Hoerner,” Sharma wrote. “While any of them could be considered for an extension, all eyes will be on Hoerner this spring. He has become the heart and soul of the team. …

“The uncertainty around the CBA could influence how the Cubs approach this, but Hoerner is an ideal fit for a team that seems poised to contend for the next few years. The upcoming free-agent classes don’t appear especially strong, and Hoerner could top the market next winter. The Cubs should do everything they can to keep him in-house.”

Hoerner is renowned for his defensive skills and would be highly sought after in free agency, making a contract extension a priority for the Cubs. He also plays a key role in the clubhouse and is a two-time Gold Glove Award winner, earning the honor in 2023 and 2025.

Hoerner as a Trade Candidate

Because Hoerner will become a free agent at the end of the season, his name was linked to trade discussions during the offseason. Reports suggested the Cubs might consider trading Hoerner or Matt Shaw following the signing of Alex Bregman.

Despite this, star infielder Dansby Swanson expressed hope that Hoerner stays with the team, emphasizing his value both on and off the field.

“Nico means the world to me and to this team, just who he is as a person,” Swanson said. “He brings the same type of energy and competitive spirit that Alex does. He’s just a really good player, a really good winner, and irreplaceable.”

With spring training underway, it appears likely that Hoerner will start the season with the Cubs.

Hoerner Wants to Stay

Although trade talks included his name, Hoerner has made it clear he wants to remain in Chicago. He enjoys playing for the Cubs and appreciates the current roster, expressing his desire to continue contributing.

“I definitely want to be here for this season and to be a part of this group,” Hoerner said. “There’s been a steady arc of improvement here. We all wish we’d made the playoffs earlier and gone further last year, but you have to recognize progress. We’re in a position now to take the next step.”

Whether this leads to a contract extension remains uncertain, but it’s a real possibility if the Cubs decide against trading him.
