JUST IN: Done deal!! Phillies Officially Signs New Outfielder to Record Deal

The Philadelphia Phillies could be hearing renewed calls for sweeping changes after winning only a single postseason game and suffering a second straight early playoff exit, though executing a major reset is far from simple.

Philadelphia is tied to sizable long-term contracts for established veterans such as Bryce Harper, Trea Turner and Zack Wheeler. With so much money already committed, the club has limited flexibility to expand payroll or open many roster spots for new additions.

Even with those constraints at the major league level, the Phillies found a way to invest in the future this week by landing a highly regarded young talent as the international signing period opened.

“Venezuelan center fielder Francisco Renteria, ranked the No. 3 prospect in 2026 by MLBPipeline, signed with the Phillies for a $4 million bonus,” Lochlahn March reported for The Philadelphia Inquirer. “Renteria’s bonus is the second-highest for an international prospect in the 2026 class. It is also the highest for a Phillies international amateur signing since 2015, when Dominican outfielder Jhailyn Ortiz signed for $4 million.”

Handing a record-tying international amateur deal to the 17-year-old may look bold on the surface, but Renteria has the potential to far outperform the investment.

He has already shown impressive power while competing against older players in Venezuela’s professional league and turned heads with a standout showing in a home run derby in his home country last month.

“Players who command significant signing bonuses and attention on the international scene are often physically ahead of their peers, a truism that Renteria fits to a tee,” according to his MLBPipeline scouting report. “Scouts think the 6-foot-3 outfielder has the actions and all-around athleticism to stick in center field long-term.”
