During the Saturday’s Headlines segment in the second intermission of Hockey Night in Canada on Sportsnet, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman offered a fresh update on the future of Auston Matthews with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Speaking during Sportsnet’s broadcast of the Leafs’ matchup against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night, Friedman addressed the ongoing conversation surrounding the team captain and his long-term outlook in Toronto as speculation continues to build.

Maple Leafs’ struggles spark questions

Currently sitting near the bottom of the Eastern Conference and on track to miss the playoffs for the first time in a decade, Toronto’s difficult 2025–26 campaign has sparked growing questions about the organization’s direction. A seven-game losing streak following the Olympic break, combined with the club taking a selling approach at the NHL trade deadline, has only intensified debate about the roster’s future.

Matthews, widely considered the team’s top player, has experienced consistent winning seasons and playoff appearances throughout his first nine years with the franchise. However, a disappointing season both individually and collectively has led to increased speculation about the star scorer’s long-term future with the club.

End-of-season conversation expected

Friedman noted that there was never any possibility of Matthews being dealt at the recent trade deadline. However, he revealed that once the season concludes, the player and organization are expected to “sit down and have a conversation.” He added that the meeting may not occur immediately after the season, as both sides could choose to “wait and see how everything unfolds.”

Friedman also shared a story from two years before Matthews reached unrestricted free agency in August 2023, when he eventually signed his current contract. At that time, Matthews reportedly told the Maple Leafs he planned to stay in Toronto unless “it went off the rails.”

Organization remains confident

According to Friedman, the Maple Leafs feel confident Matthews would not place the organization in a difficult situation. The belief within the team is that if any concerns about his future arose, the star forward would communicate them clearly.

“At this point in time, I don’t think he (Matthews) has given them any indication he is unhappy or wants to go anywhere,” Friedman said.

For now, that update provides some reassurance for Toronto and its fan base regarding Matthews’ future. Still, with a season that has veered off course, broader questions about the direction of the organization are unlikely to fade anytime soon.

Once the campaign ends, the circumstances could lead to an intriguing offseason conversation between the Maple Leafs and their superstar center as both sides evaluate what the next chapter may look like.
