Just In: Kings GM Scott Perry Confirms Major Domantas Sabonis Decision

Despite ongoing speculation about his future, top star still appears to be a key piece of the Sacramento Kings’ plans moving forward.

According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, initial conversations between top veteran and new general manager Scott Perry have been encouraging, even as the team enters a summer full of questions and potential roster changes. Top star, 29, has not requested a trade and is reportedly open to the vision Perry has for the franchise.

“In terms of building blocks, team and league sources say the Kings continue to signal a commitment to veteran big man Domantas Sabonis,” Amick reported after the first night of the 2025 NBA Draft.

Although Sabonis has reportedly been unhappy with how the Kings handled the situation involving De’Aaron Fox, he hasn’t demanded a move and is said to be engaged in productive conversations with Perry about the organization’s future. The three-time All-Star, who is set to make $140.3 million over the next three seasons, is said to be taking a patient approach.

This update is consistent with a previous report by ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel, who stated that Sacramento has not been making trade inquiries involving Sabonis.

“League sources confirmed to ClutchPoints that the Kings have not been reaching out to other teams to gauge interest in Domantas Sabonis,” Siegel reported. “While his name has surfaced in trade rumors, Sacramento currently has no intention of moving the 29-year-old star big man.”

Domantas Sabonis’ future still remains uncertain despite positive talks with Kings GM Scott Perry

Still, Brett Siegel pointed out that there are lingering uncertainties surrounding Domantas Sabonis’ future with the Kings.

“Sabonis’ long-term situation remains unclear, as the All-Star center is still looking for answers,” Siegel noted.

That desire for clarity has been a recurring theme. After Sacramento’s 120–106 loss to the Dallas Mavericks in the Play-In Tournament, Sabonis told reporters he wanted “to know what’s going to happen” with the franchise. According to The Athletic’s Sam Amick and Anthony Slater, Sabonis is expected to seek a clearer understanding of the team’s direction this offseason.

Additionally, HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto reported earlier this month that rival teams are keeping an eye on whether Sabonis might eventually request a trade.

Although he remains under contract for another three years, Sabonis’ stance could change if Sacramento drifts further from playoff contention—especially in the wake of the De’Aaron Fox trade and potential discussions involving veteran forward DeMar DeRozan.

In the meantime, the Kings are focused on the second night of the 2025 NBA Draft at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. On Wednesday, they acquired the 24th overall pick from the reigning champion Oklahoma City Thunder and used it to select Colorado State guard Nique Clifford. The trade cost Sacramento a 2027 first-round pick that is protected for selections 1–16, based on the San Antonio Spurs’ performance that year.

The Kings also hold the 42nd overall pick heading into Thursday night’s action.
