JUST IN: MLB Insider confirms Phillies to sign 5X All-Star In Massive Deal

Both the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets saw their seasons end in disappointment — the Phillies were knocked out by the Los Angeles Dodgers, while the Mets failed to reach the playoffs.

Now, both clubs are preparing for significant offseason decisions as key players head to free agency. Pete Alonso has opted out of his contract, and Kyle Schwarber’s deal with Philadelphia has expired. For Alonso, it marks a second straight year on the open market, and this time he’s expected to land the long-term deal he couldn’t secure last offseason. The five-time All-Star enjoyed a strong campaign, raising his batting average by 32 points from last year while posting higher home run and RBI totals.

According to The Athletic’s Jim Bowden, Alonso could command a six-year, $182 million contract — and the Phillies are seen as a legitimate threat to lure him away from the Mets. Meanwhile, Schwarber’s return to Philadelphia is uncertain, as the front office might hesitate to commit to another big deal given his age.

Pete Alonso Rumors and Free Agency 2024-2025

Alonso, who is younger and offers more defensive value, could fill Schwarber’s power void if the slugger departs. His addition would also free up Bryce Harper to shift back to the outfield, something Harper has already expressed willingness to do. While Schwarber remains a beloved figure among Phillies fans, questions about whether his power will hold up as he nears age 33 could complicate his future with the team.
