Just In: Phillies Confirms Final Decision Regarding Kyle Schwarber After Win Over Athletics

The Philadelphia Phillies extended their MLB-best eight-game winning streak with an extra-innings victory over the Athletics, tying their longest streak since Rob Thomson became manager. The win was fueled by top stars clutch performance, as the slugger drove in two crucial runs in the 11th inning, bringing his season totals to 18 home runs and 40 RBIs.

While he continues to shine, the Phillies face a pivotal decision regarding his future. He can become a free agent after this season unless the team extends him, and contract talks hit a snag when he turned down their initial offseason offer. According to The Athletic‘s Ken Rosenthal, negotiations stalled after that first proposal, though Schwarber has expressed a desire to remain in Philadelphia—while also being comfortable entering free agency.

Now, general manager Preston Mattingly has made it clear that the Phillies are making Schwarber a top priority. Speaking to Sports Radio 94 WIP, Mattingly said, “Kyle is a priority for us. He’s someone we’re thrilled with and obviously want to be part of our future.”

As Schwarber puts together a career-best season at age 32, he’s playing his way into a potential four- or five-year deal worth at least $100 million. If he reaches the open market, several contenders are expected to pursue him—but the Phillies are hoping to secure him before that happens.
